Lak is a Coordinator of Volunteers at PLEA Kidstart Program. He’s always full of happiness and he loves marathon running and spending time with his family.
From the moment the Climb and Conquer program opened its door in 2011, the program has been a huge success for all the KidStart participants. The program gives kids at risk an opportunity to access an activity that would otherwise not be available. Many of the KidStart Kids have raved about how much they enjoyed the Rock Climbing. Thanks Joe for all your hard in coordinating this valuable opportunity for kids.
Coordinator of Volunteers
KidStart is a one-to-one mentoring program for children and youth, in Metro Vancouver, who face serious difficulties in their lives. The young people in our program are at risk, meaning they are vulnerable to issues such as addiction, crime, abuse and/or family crisis. They may be struggling with problems at school, with their family, with their peers and in the community. Due to their challenging and often unstable circumstances, these children may not be eligible for other mentoring programs.
We assign them a volunteer mentor, who serves as a consistent and positive role model; someone who plans activities that will provide the young person with opportunities to experience success and achievement. All volunteers are carefully screened, oriented and supervised by our staff.
The primary objective of the program is to strengthen youths’ resilience to the risk factors that are known to lead to victimization, violence and criminal activities. It has a proven track record of helping young people overcome adversity and become more active in their communities.
